One of the first periodical magazines in the United States was called the Saturday Evening Post. Over the years, magazines and newspapers have communicated news and events in various forms, keeping pace with technology. At first, there were few or no pictures. The first pictures were drawings, and then they advanced to color photography. With the increasing popularity of the Internet, it is inevitable that periodicals will adapt themselves to this medium, and new ones will develop.
Today’s Family First site is an example of how this new medium can do this. It is called The Digital Journalist, and it is a monthly magazine with a potpourri of articles on a wide variety of subjects. They range from the Pope’s visit to Cuba to a retrospective on the past 25 years of the Presidency, to a discussion of Macs vs. PCs in the newsrooms. But instead of static words and pictures, there are audio and video clips that enhance the enjoyment and understanding of a story, giving it a real “you are there” feeling.
It is advancements in both technologies and journalism that will soon make this type of publication mainstream. Enjoy your visit.
